Sign up to be a host at the largest cane convention in the world (5002)

In 2008 there will be 2 cane conventions www.canemania2008@aol.com in Paris on OCT. 9, 10,11, the other will be Sticks and Shades 2008 in Miami Beach, in connection with the Miami Beach Antique Show, Feb. 1,2,3. I am writing to you today to invite you to be a host of that event. I want all cane dealers, senior collectors and web sites that deal in canes to have equal billing in having collectors think that you care about them learning more about canes, so they will have a warm and fuzzy feeling about you. I recommend not inviting any of your customers; you can come and steal other dealers customers. I do recommend inviting other dealers customers; they will then think you care about them and become your customers. I will personally introduce you to all mine, and encourage them to buy from you.
Several dealers have already agreed to be host, because they didnt want to be talked about. Of course it didnt hurt I told them, people always talk about you when you are not there to defend yourself. If there is an election to plan next years event, I would like to make it a yearly event, I will be nominating all those that dont show up. I already know who I am going to nominate to head the event, the one who has never come. Wont he be embarrassed when he declines, and we all tell everybody we know we werent worth his effort? You won't want to miss that.
Florida has a huge number of collectors, who have all promised to come, as I said above I will be introducing you to all three of mine. The Miami Beach Convention Center has already been rented for the event, so if none of you show up, they will have plenty of space. What a beautiful facility and location, only 20 minutes from Miami International Airport. I feel very privileged the Antique Show management recommended this event to the convention center, without which no one gets space in that facility during the show. The show will also be promoting our event. I always say Miami isnt in America, but Miami Beach is. Miami Beach is generally safe, and a wonderful background, with its beautiful beaches, great weather, sidewalk restaurants, and good hotels, all a short distance from the convention center.
I have verbal commitments from the following people to teach at the event. Catherine Dikes son will bring some of his mothers canes and tell stories about them and how she acquired them. He kept every cane he inherited from his mother, and is giving them a good home in America. They have never been shown publicly since the passing of his mother 6 years ago, and he has never been to a cane event. It turns out; he had a number of copies of Cane Curiosa, which the association has purchased. He has given the cane collecting community a gift; he wants me to sell them to dealers at a highly reduced price from what they have been going for, as he felt that is what his mother would want. While they last, these unused first editions will cost $160 including shipping in U.S. and $200 including shipping outside the U.S. Canes of the United States, unused first editions, will be $55 including shipping in U.S., and $75 including shipping outside U.S. These sold for $95 in 1994. You can use credit cards, paypal or checks, email me at myles9145@comcast.net tell me how many you want of each and Ill give you instructions. They will be sold to collectors for a higher price, so you can make money by supplying these great books to your customers, and have your customers think you care about them learning, while still making a profit. I photographed his half of his mothers collection and they are now in www.antiquecaneworld.com
Herb Ratner, a cane collector for 53 years, will speak and bring pieces from his collection on how to tell good ivory canes. He also has one of the best collections of gold quartz canes in the world, and will bring pieces from that collection. One our host Charles Daughterty will have a display of all the different types of ivories, and teach how to recognize their distinctives. Rick Wagner, pictured above snd another host, will lead a panel of experts to answer questions on attendees canes. Richard Steffens will talk on ferrules and Reproductions and fakes. Roger Heiple, will show and talk about his 45 year collection of civil war veterans canes. Paul Weisberg, has agreed to show some of his canes. Dick Mandel will autograph the Mandel Cane Collection. An elective class on beginning digital photography and how to use computers to put pictures of canes on the internet.
Other than the great opportunity for stealing other dealers customers, another reason for coming is to present a program. If you have an interest let me know. The entire program will be professionally video recorded. The cane events should be a historical record of provenance, who owns or has owned a particular cane, and the archiving of information for future generations. There will be video interviewing, on a volunteer basis, all cane dealers and collectors who have exceptional collections, for future generations, a whos who in canes. So bring a few canes or handles that can be put in the video with you.
More than 1000 canes have already been committed to be at the event, and I expect many more than that, as there will be a show free to all participants who want to buy, sell or swap, with overnight security for the entire event. Host fee will be $500 for two people, which will include all conference fees, 2 tables for selling canes, or showing your pictures, giving out all the advertising you wish, and the publicity which will come from being a host, are a few of the benefits. Attendee fees will be $250 per person. All future information will be sent by email to members.
If you dont have email, Ill send you U.S. Post, informing you, but this will be the last letter Ill send about being a host or coming unless, you send Host fee, $500 or registration fee of $100, to be an attendee, balance due Jan 1, 2008. Send to IAAUCC, 1259 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos, MI., 48864. Hosting fee is due by April 1, 2007, so I can put your name on all the publicity that goes out to attendees. Credit cards and paypal can be used in the shopping cart on the site under buy canes. If for some reason I am in a cane crash and it doesnt happen, all monies will be returned. You will not be required to do anything you dont agree to, except be nice to those who come, and answer questions about canes. Answering questions about canes is different than giving values, which you never have to do. I will be informing the collectors, dealers charge for appraisals, and recommend they use you for their cane insurance appraisals, another reason for coming.
. One of the reasons this will be a high profile event is that all 1000 dealers from the show will be invited to participate in the event and come to the auction; there are dozens of small dealers that have and sell some canes in their booths, as well as all the booths that sell nothing but canes. On Sunday afternoon there will be an auction, or a series of mini auctions, as I am inviting all cane auction houses to use the facility, to sell anyones canes they want. I would like to see some cataloged sales, or uncataloged, and I will advertise you are taking consignments. I really dont expect any of you to take me up on this offer, but it was the only way I could make this a nonproprietary event, and all you have to do is let me know you are interested. If none of you accept my gracious invitation, I will be the auctioneer and sell a couple hundred uncataloged canes, consigned by the host. I would rather have you do it, and I guarantee you will do well.
The cane event will be held from 8:00am to 12:00 noon, a few feet away from the show, in a very quiet comfortable setting, with the show starting at noon. The first 100 dealers to sign up, will get free entrance for all five days to one of the best antique shows in the world, with 4 miles of aisles.
A vote was taken at canemania2006, and it was agreed by the group that Miami Beach is where and when the next event would take place, but no agreement was made as to who would plan it. I proposed my internet site house an association of cane collectors and plan the event on the internet as a group. No one was interested in that, so on the way home I formed my own organization, and elected my self President, with no dissenting votes, and began to plan it my self.
After the event, part of that group decided they would like to go to Paris instead, and began to plan that event. I am telling you this so you understand the back ground of how there came to be two events in one year. I support their event, am planning on attending, and will do all I can to promote it, and they will have a representative at this event to answer questions and sign people up for Paris. There is no problem with them or with me that I know of. I think that those attending each event will be a basically different group with different goals, and both will be successful. My goal is to appeal to newer collectors that need practical information to learn how to build a good collection, to justify their ever increasing investment. We will be having a seniors lounge for those of you who arent interested in a particular topic or any topic, as all classes will be elective. In fact you may elect to stay home, send the host fee, as there is no requirement to attend to be a host. Ill have a complete set of excuses, why you arent there; a close family member is dying, in the hospital, having a baby, etc. etc. etc. If you actually have an excuse, there will be no extra charge to use yours.
The antique business in general is sick today because there are not the new collectors to buy the large collections that are coming on the market. If we dont make an effort to get new collectors that will buy our collections, our industry will also become sick, and prices will go down.
Im willing to do this, because of the pleasure canes have given me these many years. I think an organization run by the members will come, it will just take time. It is my goal to facilitate that happening, and I will not give up, until my term ends March l, 2009. Gary Durow, www.antiquecaneworld.com
