Carved Dragon With Glass Eyes (8496)
As you can see from all the great wood carved canes I have for sale, I like carved wood. It doesn't take much more time to carve ivory than wood. Therefore, most all the fake carved canes are ivory. It is also easier to make ivory look old than wood. Maybe if I were an expert on carved ivory I would have a different conclusion. I here by make the claim that I have never seen a wood carved cane that I was fooled by its age. I hereby make the claim, I have seen a lot of ivory canes that I didn't know the age. What percentage, I don't know. If you look in Reproductions and Fakes you can see the ivory canes I have bought, that have a gray antiquing on them, which I bought as new fakes in England. Never used antique ivory canes have a even creamy color that can't be faked. Canes that were used, have dirt in the cracks and at the bottom of the carvings, which can be closely duplicated by tea and minwax antiquing solutions. The bottom line is I like carved wood canes and think they are underpriced for their quality and workmanship. I'm still trying to determine what I think about refinished carved wood canes and how that affects their value. Our previous discussion covered original finish only. At the moment I am recommending original finish only.
