Ivory Handle With A Tortoise Shaft (8623)
The hook elephant ivory handle is nicely carved, and not common in a hook handle, but the real rarity is the tortice shaft. Working with tortice was a highly skilled craft, with the best work coming from France. The inter shaft is wood, with the seames in the thin tortice invisable. I've included a picture of a crack in the tortice, which doesn't seem to hurt the value much, unless there are a lot of them or there are pieces of the tortice missing. It's also common to have worm holes in the tortice, which look like pits. A few of these won't affect the value strongly either. The ferrule on this one is replaced, which should again be replaced with an original one. Its worth buying a fifty to a hundred cane just to get the ferrule for a cane of this quality. A lot of people probably wouldn't care about a replaced ferrule, but I don't like them.
