Tin Makers Torch And Example Of His fine Work (8647)
The entire shaft is a fuel tank, with the torch in the bottom part of the handle. The lid is removable and there are about a dozen card shapes. Whats interesting to me is that they are l" deep. I can't think of one purpose for them except to show a perspective client how good his work was. In larger sizes they could be cookie molds, but these are only about 3/4". Tin was used prolifically about 1870, which is when I think this one was made. There is not one new soldier joint or repair, its all old and It would have taken a lot of work to have made this. What I find most interesting is that the shaft is tapered. It's considered that the shaft must taper for it to be of the period. The alcohol burner was used to melt lead soldier for use in his craft.
