Russian With Silver Pique And Bores Head (8766)
I call this one and the last one my russian pair, as I brought them from Russia. Although their silver work are completely different patterns and one has a bore and the other a donkey, you can tell they were made by the same person or factory. I was told they were made in the Ukrane and not in Moscow or Saint Petersberg. The other thing they have in common is that they are in mint condition, probably because the shafts were refinished. Yet you know from the workmanship they couldn't possibly be new. I saw one of these handles on a plain shaft at one of the cane auctions about 15 years ago, so these handles arn't common. The detail on the handle is terrific and its very heavy nickel plated. All original patena so you know its old, but it doesn't look like its ever been polished and there is no wear on the plating. If you hit somebody with this handle it would do some real dammage, so I would put them in the knobkerry catagory. These are large handles, 3" long and large shafts at l", yet because of the way the ears are placed you know they were cane handles as opposed to umbrella handles converted to canes. The pictures of the silver work on the shaft doesn't do it justice as it is nearly 2' long.
