Quality Lighter (397154)
Famous lighter canes, such a ronson bring a high price, but most of the rest are either fakes or under priced. There has been little written about lighters. This lighter brings up some questions about them. I was once told, by someone I respect, that this one was made by Cartier. I wouldn’t know how to prove that, but again, I’m putting myself out there , reaching for knowledge. What I do know is that this is a authentic gadget that has the characteristics of the kind of quality it takes to be a cane of the period. Most take little time to look at those characteristics. This one is all hand carved out of a hardwood. The hidden hinged handle with brass latch matches the shaft. The mechanism is well made and fits the shaft perfectly. The hollowed out area in the handle has the same patina as the shaft. There is no gun bluing on the metal. If you don’t know what gun bluing on brass looks like you shouldn’t be buying gadget canes. Buy a bottle and paint it on brass it’s really simple. The fakes are usually lighters made for another use, like small round ones put inside brass threads. No antique gadget should ever be weak. I’ve never seen an original where the handle turns off with threads or pulls off without threads for that matter.
