Sun Dial on Wine Testing cane (397901)
The ivory sundial compass is covered by a blown glass dome, which is revealed when the ivory cover is screwed off. It has ivory threads, which often dont work because ivory like wood warps. This entire piece screws off to reveal a large hollow handle fit with an alcohol float. Held in place by the well at the bottom of the float are the weights for measuring different alcohol percentages. The size of this one is about a quarter of the size thats considered normal. The scale is so small on this one that it has a magnifier to read it. Before the entire handle is screwed off, you cant help but put your hand on the loose ivory ring that surrounds the handle, an amazing accomplishment when you consider electricity hadnt been invented yet. Screwing the large1.2 mahogany shaft off exposes 6 sectional boxwood and brass measure for kegs. The center of the shaft also parts to hold an ivory thermometer to tell the temperature of the brew, a necessary item for the float measure. One isnt any good without the other. Keep that in mind when you see a float in a handle. On the opposite side of the opening is a ivory folding knife and fork with cork screw.
