One of rarest American gadget canes in world (397915)
I'm not sure this should come under the country handcrafted catagory, because it was definitely made by a professional instrument maker. Inside the violin is the mans name who made it, Agustus Johnson, the year 1898, and Freeport. It originally came to me from the important collection of Harvey Webber of Hampton NH., with no knowledge of what freeport it came from or anything else. After I purchased it, I first went to Freeport Maine's historical library, to know avail. They did, however, give me a list of all the other freeports. The mans name was listed in Freeport ILL. city directory for 1898 along with the Organ maker company he worked for. All made from different kinds of exotic maple, the workmanship is impecable. It didn't fit in my cane racks, and a dealer paid me enough to buy a lot of canes so I sold it. I've often regreted it, however, because I think its the most important American gadget cane ever made. There are a lot of European Violin canes, but have you ever seen an American one, especially with all the provenance, Harvey and I, as well as all the documentation as to who, when, and where it was made. It was already sold to another unknown collector, before I sold it. If you want your provenance added to this description let me know. I'm prowd to have owned it, and there may be other work that shows up by this very talented craftman, another good purpose for being here. Gary Durow
