Doctors With A Ivory handle & Instrument Container (397935)
Every time I look at a ivory ball I think of the biggest laugh I've ever had in antiques. At an antique show I picked up a hinged ivory ball. It had groves on the outside like a mellon, and a carved erotic scene on the inside. I've seen canes with them as handles. As I examined it I noticed there was green in little cracks on the outside of the ball, but not in the grooves. There was also no green on the inside. Then I remembered the green is the same color as old pool chalk. They had taken an old pool ball and carved it into something more desireable. The grooves were also lighter than the outside skin of the ball. Meaning color doesn't go all the way thru the ivory. I think it depends how thick the ivory is. The grooves were pretty deep. So, if you ever see green on a cane handle, you will know where it comes from. Notice the black speck on the top of this knob, its the nerve that is always in elephant ivory. You might be asking if you can tell if this is the original knob on this cane. The answer is no. It's old, not a cue ball, but thats it.
I like the instrument holder in this one, it fits so well. The scalpels are very rare, a pair of folding ones with different blades. The metal on the outside is the same metal as the container, silver plate.
