 Ivory Inset In Handle Of Mary And Jesus (8207)
This handpainted insert on top of 5' staff is signed by S. Paula. These ivory placks were made for many purposes. Hanging on wall in a frame was probably the most common. This is one of the most interesting ones I have seen. I didn't even know it had a religious meaning when I got it many years ago. The mother is Mary Mother of God, the boy on the right is Jesus. Mary is symbolicly holding the children of the world. Jesus is looking on but not the subject of this wonderful work of art. I have no idea what this staff was used for. Its made of fruitwood and in wonderful condition. Ferrule is nickle plated brass. Staff fits in matching base. Have you figured out how I know its Mary and Jesus, the hallos over their heads. For many years I never even noticed the fine hallo lines.
