Four Japanese Carved (8243)

The second cane from the right was one of my first big mans canes, which I bought from Michael German. I was really excited as it’s shaft was over 2”. Then I found the third one, and said at over 3” shaft this surely must be the largest of this type. This one was interesting because it had a pair of fencing swords inside including the handles. Then I found the largest one that was 4”. It wasn’t until sometime later that I found the tin ferrule was removable to reveal a huge hollow area. Bamboo has a wall across at every line, usually about every inch or so. Its hollow in between, that’s why bamboo is so easy to hollow or drill out and still be strong. I can’t hold the largest cane in my hand. It’s been suggested it might have been made for a Satsuma wrestler, I have no idea if that’s true as I had no idea bamboo grew that large. I believe these are all Japanese from the 1890’s.
