Bakelite Canes (8294)
I like bakelite, it was made into every shape you can imagine. It was made from 1907 to 1954. Because it was so poisonenous to the workers that worked with it, the E.P.A. required air filters that made it too expensive to product. Which in effect put the companies that produced it out of business. I sell simicrome a metal polish includeing postege for $10.00. The pink polish turns yellow when rubbed on bakelite. You can smell it I'm told, when you rub it, I don't have a smeller. The earlest bakelite was a dark brown that wasn't very pretty. It wasn't until the catalin Radio Co. made it bright colors that it's popularity increased. Catalin is bakelite. Bakelite came in both handcarved and molded. If the cuts are undercut it is handcarved. My assessment is that most handles are umbrella handles. The length of time it was made is longer after 1930 than before. Also the population is larger after 1930 than before. The easyest way to tell is that the bases on umbrella handles are usually square with a small hole for the umbrella shaft. Cane handles aare always round. Colors change in time, as they do when they are polished. After polishing, the colors will change again, over time. The common colors like amber, butterscotch, lemmon, applejuice, all have names. I'm told there are probably a 1000 colors.
