Gorham Picnic Cane In Sterling (8327)
This is a smaller variety than the other gorham picnic cane in this book. I believe this one was also a prototype and never put in production. It is the same acid resist as the other two I have. The other two are both the same size and just slightly different in the way they are made. All three have different patterns of acid resist. All three have acid resist stems below the knob. The other two have match safes and salt and pepper shakers you can't spill in the center under the cup. This one has a dime dispenser below the matching collapsable cup. As the others,it has a compas in the lid. The soldiered ring that holds the separate compas is signed gorham, as is the bottom of the cup. All have rosewood shafts with American original bimetal ferrules. I think they were prototypes because I have never seen any others. My guess is the container knobs were sold as cyclist cups. I have seen 100's of different cups with as many different pocket holders that contain them. Years ago I had a collection of them. The cups were almost always made of nickel plated brass, with one pewter. One of the most common one had a bicyle and rider on the lid, hense its name. I never saw one in sterling, but it would make sense they existed. The more expensive the fewer that were made, and these would have been very expensive. Acid resist was very labor intensive.
