Cane Curiosa By Catherine Dike (8382)
I just finished writing about the rocket cane that is coming up next. There are a number of canes I have been reluctant to write about, because they are in Dike. I had decided early on I wasn’t going to when I named the book beyond Dike. Like many things in the site, ideas come to me when I write. It came to me, that most of us who have been collectors for a long time, have, “Cane Curiosa by Catherine Dike.” I paid $68 for mine in the 80’s. After that book went out of print, its now $300+. When I go to antique shows and talk to collectors, most of them don’t have it. I think many of the decisions to buy canes is made from books. People see a particular cane, think it’s cool and decide they would like to have it. When it comes up for sale they are a prepared buyer. I have also had collectors tell me they would like to have a particular cane in Dike. Her book is good for the cane business. A high price on it, the inability to find it, and not knowing they should have it is not good for cane collecting community. Her chapter on fakes is worth the price of the whole book. When it comes to protecting one from making a mistake, $300 is cheap, yet try to tell that to someone who thinks $300 is highway robbery for any book, when they could have a cane for that money. The bottom line is, I am going to be less concerned about showing what is in Dike, and more concerned about adding information that the internet medium is best at, more pictures and more space for observations about important canes that are not generally available to beginners and experts, because Dike is not easily available. A good example is the important unholy trinity in the next description.
