Several Japanese Paper Parasols (8467)
They have very little value, yet they were a lot of work to make, and the hand painting is often terrific. I have a few which I paid twenty to thirty dollars for, that I really like. I looked at a lot of them before choosing, because most are damaged. It’s not easy to find good art work, in good condition. Again I think they are undervalued, yet supply and demand says that’s all they are worth. I don’t even know how long they were made, but I would guess 1890 to the 1950’s The lacquer covering on the paper becomes hard from the heat, from being stored in the attic, after they bought it as a souvenir in Japan. When you try to open it, it tears, making it valueless. There is nothing that can be done to fix them, and it’s a waste of time to try. Examine those you are looking at carefully, and only buy if they are in mint condition. Enjoy the creativity.
