Massive Ladies Art Noveau Gold And Mop (8685)
This is the first of 10 ladies canes. I have a friend that says these styles are all umbrella handles, and never were canes. In fact it actually bugs him that so many people are putting umbrella handles on shafts. Let me go a step further, I think zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. These canes all have one thing in common, they all have antique shafts on them. You notice I didn't say original shafts. I don't think anyone can tell if they are original or not. If you go to the catalogs in Archive you will see handles similar to these. You could buy them as umbrellas, loose handles, and on the shaft of your choice. I think there is too much dogma about canes. There are lots of different opinions, with little proof to back up those opinions. For me the bottom line is this, if the shaft is new, and the handle is long and thin at the bottom, the odds are astronomically huge the handle was an umbrella that has been put on a shaft. Old shafts are too hard to find to bother to put them on a $100 handle. There were also larger diameter handles, 1/2" to 1", that were put on 3" to 6" pieces of cane shafts, depending on how long the handles were, then put on umbrellas. If these, larger size handles fit comfortably on the hand, they were made for canes also. My friend and I are both irritated when we see handles that don't fit the hand on shafts, I've defined them as fakes.
