Reliquary Of S. M. Goretti (8696)

This reliquary is a good one to start with because it has all it is supposed to have. S. M. Goretti is the Saint, with a piece of his bone attached above his name. The relic container can be taken off the cane and turned over to see that two pieces of string were used to attach the relic to the container. Hot wax was then put on the string and the bishop used his seal ring to stamp the wax as proof it was Goretti’s bone inside. You can tell it was a bishop because there is a tassel on each side of the crest with one ball on top, a string with two then three below that. All the relic canes I have either have the bishops seal or you can’t tell if there is a seal at all because the container is permanently attached to the handle. I like the ones best that are removable so you can see the seal and the receptacle that holds the relic container. To me the receptacle on these are original as they are stamped with a heavy die. It would take a lot of work to tool up to make a container that would fit this way. A casting or made in a lathe would be an easier way to make a one of a kind piece. These were probably made for jewelry then put on canes. I don’t think they were only made for canes, but reliquaries are valuable and difficult to find in this form. I saw one for three hundred as a necklace a number of year’s ago. I like the authentic ness of the bishops guarantee.
