Lesson On Fake Tool Canes (8875)
This tool cane is one that is often made from a handle that was made for another use. The rosewood handles with a lid that screws off with tools inside are prolifically available for between 25 and 50 dollars. Put a brass thread on the end and attach it to a shaft. This is a good piece to use to discuss made up canes. The first clue is that the handle is made from a different wood than the shaft. i.e. Rosewood handle and ebonized hardwood shaft. They should always be matched. The second would be the brass threads on a steel chuck. The chuck is the part at the end of the handle that holds the tools to the handle when it is removed from the shaft. This chuck is always made from steel, unlike the brass one in today’s example. This canes threads to hold the handle unto the shaft is one piece. If they used a new or old shaft that doesn’t match, I’ll bet the ferrule isn’t old either. Dike has a whole chapter of items that are easily put in and on canes, check it out. A lot of them aren’t authentic, but with today’s lesson you will be much better able to tell which is which.
