A Pair Of Family Mourning Canes (9006)
I'm going to have to rethink if these are folkart gadgets or manufactured gadgets. I put them under the manufactured catagory because they were made by a professional cane maker, yet these are all handmade. For now they are here because they go with the Ivory gadget canes.
Let’s get into these two interesting handles. I know they are European from the way the dates are put on the back of the handle. There are two names on each of these, with one of the last names the same on each. On the back of the left one it says; F: 21Marts 1786 and d:1 April 1849. F must mean from, born, March 21, 1786. Died April 1, 1849. The one on the right says; From: July5,1831. Died: June 6, 1833. Here are the questions; If there are two names on each, why only one from and to date? Why only one persons hair in each? One person was 63 and the other 2. It is obvious that the shape of the handles are burial urns, which makes sense as mourning pieces. They might even be the shape of the actual burial urn. Both shafts are rose wood and have a plain unmarked silver collar, with a standard ferrule, making them newer than 1850, the period of time they started putting crowns in roads. Long ferrules were no longer needed when there was less mud, to wear down the shaft. The death date on one is 1849 and 1833 on the other, therefore these were both made after 1849. The handles were made by the same person, as were the pink silk pillows with the hair on them. My educated guess is they were made in 1850. Ulrikke
