This Double System Is A Barometer And Suitcase Cane (9164)

I defy anyone to find anything wrong with this cane, except its a little short at 31". The handle is all one piece silver plate and works perfectly. If you want to know how to test a barometer like this just put it in a zip lock plastic baggie and squeese. If it works the hand will go up and down. If it doesn't, the hand won't move. This is an original 4 section stepped malacca shaft with a horn ferrule, that when taken apart the entire cane is only 8" long for travel or storage. There is no name on the dial or on the silver collar. Near mint condition, so it didn't get a lot of use. These were used to tell how high above sea level the hikers were. These are a rare and high quality gadget, and I've only seen a couple. Just a little hint as to tell if one may be a fake, there has to be a hole in the back of the baromether to get at the screw to adjust to sea level. If there is no hole its not right. There also has to be a way to get to the mechanism for repair. If the back is sealed up because it was put on a shaft, its not right either. One last thing to think about, the handle must be all one piece to be original, if the part that holds the barometer is glued on, its not right. None of these are the case with this one. Circa 1900
