Russian Cigarette Holder In Vermiel (8256)

. Russia is becoming an interesting cane market. I’ve been in Russia 3 times and canes were very cheap, 10 years ago. This year I sold many canes that were going to Russia. I was surprised at the difference in only a few years. I think that authentic antique Russian canes will be a good investment, especially the enamels and ivories, as they had wonderful craftsman. The one pictured has terrific workmanship and is well signed, with 84 and the makers mark. The enameled and tortoise cigarette holder is also signed 84 with its makers mark. The enamel colors and workmanship is a good match, but the maker is not the same as the handle. Does that mean its not original, or that the maker of the cane purchased the parts to make the cane on special order. I wouldn’t think the stick maker would be the same as the silver maker, or that someone who worked with tortoise did silver and enameling. To me the more important question is, what qualities make the enameling old as opposided to new? The answer is quality. Picture three is a close up of modern. Can you tell the difference? Picture is another picture of a good old enamel. Notice the difference between the cigarette holder and the tau handle. The cigarette holder cane is all vermiel, which is gold on sterling. I think vermeil is far more uncommon in russian enamel.
In time I hope we have more examples of, both old and new.
