Surveyers Compass And Drafting Set. (8268)
Nickel plate brass handle with surveyers compass. Turn the compass and it removes from the shaft. Under that is a compartment for nickel plate drafting tools. The pointed ferrule sticks in the ground for use. Handle is 2.7", oak shaft is 1.2", and 36"H. No names, dates, or patents, not even on the compass. All internal parts are anadized black. A chemical process that holds up better than paint for outdoor use.
The shaft is alligatored, a term for cracks in the finish. Alligatored finishes generally come from the wood being stored in a hot envirnoment. There is no way to artifically make it, as it took a long time to produce. An attic is where I have generally found it, but a tool like this could have been stored in a barn or wearhouse. I would never strip this one, but waxing would be OK.
