Rare Flick Stick (8312)

Bronze Art Noveau woman with flick stick that comes out of her navel. The trap door fits perfectly, with good ware on the entire handle and 6” blade. It has a double latch, although single is also fine. The biggest indicator of a reproduction flick stick is the poor fit of the brass door, gun blued parts, and no wear on the blade or door. Now for me this is the interesting part, I bought it at the Big One, Atlantic City. After I got it I showed it to a full time cane dealer, who I respect. He says, I’m not sure it’s old. I was floored by his statement. I can’t believe it’s not. Our purpose today is, experts do not always agree. Although they don’t, reproductions are never one of a kind. It wouldn’t pay for this price range of piece to just make one. Rarity code 4 and value code C. You would have to have an original handle to have a mold made and all kinds of parts to make the blade work Then you would have to make a trap door from scratch. You couldn’t take the door off and make a mold of it, because the door would shrink when it was cast and wouldn’t fit. You would have to make one by hand with a file, which is why the reproductions have such a poor fit. Even then its time consuming to make anything by hand and it rarely turns out the same as an old one. If you are going to make a fake, it’s easier to put it in a antique cane with a flat top knob, to set the entire mechanism. Lastly, if you see one, you are going to see many. Time always tells.
