Scottish Vinaigrette (8506)

This solid 18K rose gold vinaigrette is Scottish. The agates in the lid are typical of those in Kilt pins. The condition is mint. When you open the lid a beautiful ornate grill is exposed. One other thing that is unusual is the solid gold chain and ring. In stead of a wrist strap, this small woman’s cane was carried on her finger. The shaft on this is one of those that were never meant to hold anything up, you can almost make a U out of it. It’s a type of reed that is as light as a feather, not more than a couple of oz, yet it’s 34” long. It’s ornateness makes it Victorian, Circa 1860. I’ve got a confession to make. I just made the date of 1860 up. Victorian is from 1840 to 1890, and I don’t think it’s late in the period, I don’t know if it’s early, so I picked a date in the center. Circa means about, so give or take 20 years, it’s about. Let me know if you can pinpoint it better. My heritage is Scottish, thank God for spell check, but even though I’ve been to England many times, these canes are so scarce, you may never see one like it. I bought this one in this country so long ago I don’t even remember where or who I got it from. This brings up another point, I don’t think you can learn a lot about canes unless you go to England. The best and the worst come from there. I learned a lot from Michael German, whose cane shop is in London. I also got some of my best canes from him many years ago. A finer Gentleman in the cane business would be hard to find. My claim to fame is not that I’ve been in 45 Countries to buy, antiques, jewelry, furniture and canes. My claim to fame is that I’ve been cheated in 45 countries. Admittedly most of it involved small amounts of money, change in foreign currencies. Over the years I’ve bought a lot of antiques, which includes canes, that turned out not to be what they were supposed to be. I’ve had the equivalent to several college educations. Well you say, you must be really dumb. Many have said that, but you have to remember how vast the field of antiques is. There are thousands of different types of collectables, and every time you venture into a new field there is a learning curve. I learned by selling, and the collectors told me with their economic votes if I did well or not. I may not have made a lot of money, but I had a great time, and I learned a little about a lot of fields. The best thing I got from that knowledge is my avocation of cruse ship antiques entertainer. I love traveling and I love meeting collectors. This website is actually the result of the concerns of collectors I have met on cruise ships. I call this website, the cruise ship internet collector’s model. I think it’s a model that will be used by many other collectors groups in the future. See cane forum for model distinctive The purpose is this, I lacked good information to make good decisions, and the information available about canes is the most pitiful of any collectable I’ve ever been involved with. Huge quantities of the information in some cane books is crap. Mine may be crap, but I’ve invited you the experts to correct it.
