Merschaum Pipe Of A Bore With Leather Cover (8548)
To look at this cane you would never know it was a pipe with out removing the leather custom made cover. It's signed by the maker in the leather on the inside. Meerschaum is a mineral; A fine whitish color, hydrous magnesium silicate that resembles clay and is found in the Mediterranean region. It has been used as bowls in pipes for 100’s of years because of its ability to take heat without cracking. It also is a great material to hand carve, as is this one. As a mineral, I assume it can't be molded, in which case you would see the mold seams, and it wouldn’t be as valuable. This has a silver collar and cover on the back of the bore’s head to keep wind from blowing out the tobacco. The shaft screws apart about a foot down the shaft to reveal the horn mouthpiece too make it more convenient to smoke. German? 1880. The stepped Malacca shaft with original ferrule look like the handle and leather cover, as new. If you didn’t have the cover and you dropped it, it would break. I have only seen a few of these intact.
