Reload A Shotgun With This Cane (8671)

Shot guns do not have rifling, and are intended for little shot to kill birds, although you can shoot slugs in them for killing larger animals. In Michigan today, you can only use shotguns below a certain line in southern Mich. to shoot deer. After the civil war percussion shot guns were converted to guns that used shells. The first shot gun shells were brass, converting to paper in the early 1900's. In the early days, most people didn't have the money to buy store bought ammunition, so they reloaded their own. All it took was a primer, the part that provided the spark and gun powder that was bought in cans. There are people that collect these gun powder containers. Reloading tools from the 1800's are so common they have almost no value. These round tools which are obviously factory made are very unusual as I have only seen these and the ones from the previous cane. The nickel tube carries the primers and a container in the shaft carries the powder. The hollow flared tube goes over the spent shell to act as a funnel as the gun powder is poured in. The pointed tool on the end of the nickel tube is for removing the primer. I always date nickel tools like this from the 1880's the date nickel plate guns were at the height of their popularity. This set is only for a 12 gauge shotgun, it won't fit any other caliber. The shaft on this is also telescoping, which turns into a suitcase cane, for a shorten more convient size. As the shaft is hollow, the top section is what holds the gunpowder.
