Real Shotgun Reloader Of Fake? (8672)
This cane has one mystery that I will bring up first, because it has to do with the creditability of the entire cane. The handle screws apart in two places, at the shaft an at the top of the wood knob on the handle. You can see in the picture that there is what looks like a screw that pulls a musket ball from the inside of a barrel. This screw is only 2” long which means it would have been used with a gun with a 2” barrel, not a typical barrel length. A ball remover is for percussion only, not for cartridge use. When you read the next cane you will have a complete description of how to reload a 10 gauge shotgun shell. For this discussion a ball remover does not go with reloading a shotgun shell. The funnel on this one is 10 gauge just like the next cane. Ten gauge is a very rare caliber, both then and today. You can see why they would carry the reloading equipment as it would not be an easy one to find in rural area’s that long ago.
The funnel is marked Parker Bros, a famous gun maker, and fits this mechanism perfectly. In side the shaft is a gun powder measure, to vary the load that is put into the shell, for different game. There is also a mirror to look down the barrel for obstructions and to check the condition of the barrel. Everything else works like the next cane. If the screw is a lead ball remover then this cane is not for reloading shotgun shells, bringing the entire cane into question. Any one know of someone to help. I am hoping this tool has another use for reloading.
