Percussion Gun Cane, Signed Rest ,fenner ,and Smith (8737)
This signed Rest, Fenner, and Smith tau handle of the 1880’s is also a percussion gun cane. The general ages of the handle and gun do not match, although the fit seems perfect. Percussion gun canes were generally gone by the 1870’s. I showed it to a gun collector and he proposed it might have been for shooting birds, specifically for taxidermy. By being able to adjust the powder and shot, the bird wouldn’t be damaged for stuffing. The steel barrel is lighter, suggesting it was for lighter shot and made later than, of the period, percussion canes. I wouldn’t know how one would prove this one, but it makes a great story. What do you think? Coutesy of Dr Donald Sawyer of Michigan.
