Hidden Percussion With Ivory Handle (8745)
I've decided gun canes have so much variety, that it is impossible to say you only like one. The catagory that this one falls in is at the top of my favorate list, the hidden percussion. Most percussion gun canes have the nipple for the cap exposed, I only have three that arn't exposed. I bought this cane from tradewinds auction near their first sale, and could never figure out how it worked, until today, when I started to write about it. Actually I thought it didn't work. As I was looking through Dike to see if there was a similar model, I saw 31/44 an eagle handle with a spring that looked like the inner spring of this cane. I know of no cane gun that cocks like this one. You have to take it apart in two places to make it operate. You load it in the separate loadable percussion cartridge then slide it into the barrel. Then you screw the ivory handle off to reveal the internal spring. Push back on the spring and it is cocked and all that remaines to be done is screw the handle back on. The trigger is external. The 4" original ferrule dates it quite early for percussion, 1830's. Beautiful honey colored Malacca shaft.
