14k Presentation (8756)

Presentation handles are 99% G.F. This one is 14K solid gold. Many of the canes I’ve seen billed as solid gold aren’t. Nitric acid is the only way to test for gold. G.F. is on brass and when acid touches it, it bubbles green. The first thing I look for on a cane that’s supposed to be solid gold, is the file mark, as filing thru the gold is the only way to test it. Soon antique cane catalogs will be appearing in archive and it will become evident how many different qualities of presentation handles there are. Eighteen, fourteen, ten, First, Second, and Third quality all have different prices. The lowest quality is the easiest to tell by the black lines. These hand engraved handles were always made from multiple pieces of gold covered brass then soldiered together. The black lines is the thinness of the gold showing thru. The thicker the gold the more invisible the lines. Solid gold is, without the brass, is usually lined by lead. Lead doesn’t bubble green.
