This Pen And Ink is the first of many examples on the characteristics of Ivory system sticks (9033)

This is the first of a series of ivory gadget canes. I think ivory gadgets are among the rarest, because they are so easily broken, or have splits in the ivory when it is lined with metal. Ivory expands and contracts like wood, and if it is lined with metal, getting wet, freezing, and heat make them susceptable to splitting. Male and female threads of ivory are much more likely to last without splitting. I use ivory binoculars as an example, you very seldom find a pair not cracked.
There is no catagory of ivory gadgets, they come under folkart, manufactured, tools, ocupational, or weapons. I have put them all here, irrespectable of what catagory they should be in. I want you to see the variety and creativity they have, as well as the quality characteristics they have in common. Ivory threads were made with a tap and die made of steel. I don't know of anyone who can make perfect threads in ivory today, without splitting the ivory. They must have used some sort of clamp to keep it from splitting.
All ivory threads with everything fitting nicely, were difficult to make. The long narrow ivory pen is especially nice with the turned detail at the end. The red in the engravings of the handle are a nice touch, as is the pique in the knob. Condition is near mint.
