Presentation Sword Cane With Gutta-percha Shaft (9190)

I think some of the rarest sword canes are the thinest ones. As you look at the square opening
at the top of the shaft, it would be difficult to have much strength if the shaft were made from wood. Gutta-percha was in essence new technology that allowed for the manufacture of a thin hollow shaft without drilling. Yet I wouldn't call this a ladies sword cane as they came less than half this diameter of 1/2". I suppose this one could go either way. What is also unique about this cane is that it is true mint condition. I don't get to use this grade for many antique canes as they were generally carried for long periods of time. Gutta-percha was a tuff material, harder than wood, and wern't common in a sword cane. I would date this circa 1860, as there is a dog gutta-percha sword cane later in this section dated 1860. I think mint calls for extra consideration of this one.
