 Umbrella With Baleen Stays Needing Restoration (8825)
I am in the process of restoring this one and thought you might like to see and hear what needs to be done. The stays are made from the roof of the sperm whales mouth. These were made in America and Europe, I don't know how to tell the difference. Several of the tips were broken off so I had a machinest turn all new ones, exactly like the horn ones that were on it. The stays had to be cut back 1/2" so all the ends would be even. Now I need to have a cover made. I have no idea if anyone will pay what it cost for a restored umbrella like this. For now I am doing it for me, as I think its the right thing to do. These are not all that rare, and are available if you want one. I can tell you there are less umbrella collectors than any other collector in the world. I met a lady in Chicago that had about 25 of them, and she is the only other collector I have actually met. I have heard there are others, but they never go out unless it is raining, I'm told. As these descriptions go from back to front, you haven't gotten to any of my other information yet, I claim to be the worlds largest collector of umbrellas, which no one has disputed.
