Japanese Staghorn Carvings. (9188)

This is a specialized art form, that I am not an expert in. I have a few that will give us some insite, but not to the depth I would like to go. This handle is still on the original umbrella frame, but without any cloth. I've decided to sell this one as is. I don't really know what it will bring, and whether it would be worth the $100 cloth redue. This would be considered a low end handle. It's well done, signed, and in perfect condition, but not very elaborate. I think I am going to put $400 on it and see what happens. Circa 1890. The shape tells you it should never be on a cane shaft, which is what happens to most Japanese handles. The Japanese artist were among the best in the world, and wouldn't take a back seat to anyone. Each person determines what art form they like. I met a man today that collects Japanese Wood Block Prints. He likes canes but had never seen many of the Japanese canes or umbrellas, even though he had been in Japan many times to buy his prints. He said he had never seen any, and the reason for that is they are all collected in Japan. I think there are a lot more in our country than theirs, at lower prices too. These were exported in large numbers a 100 years ago. I think these would be a great thing to specialize in.
